Sevastopol (from ancient Greek for "Glorious") is a large modern-day seaport upon the Black Sea and is the home of both the Russian and Ukrainian Fleets. It is also the industrial, scientific and cultural center of the southern Ukraine. The territory of Sevastopol was settled at the beginning of the 1-st millennium BC and has seen many wars over the centuries, most recently World War II.
The hero-city of Sevastopol is called a memorial or a museum-city. At every step you can come across one of countless monuments commemorating the events of the legendary defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean war (1854-1855) and World War II (1941-42). These are the monuments of Glory. Among them are the Panorama "Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855", "The Storming of Sapun Mount on May 7, 1944 Diorama", and the Monument to the Scuttled Ships that became the emblem of Sevastopol. The Black Sea Fleet was the first to beat off the air attacks of the Germans during World War II fascists. The defense of Sevastopol lasted 250 days. On May 9, 1944 the armies of the 4th Ukrainian Front liberated Sevastopol. Day and night the torches of Eternal Glory burn over the Hero-City of Sevastopol. Sapun Mount and Malakhov Hill hold them highest. Sevastopol is a busy city. Its ships fish in distant Atlantic, trade in the Orient, and its factories construct giant cranes. It discovers the mysteries of the sea and raises new housing blocks as fast as the future comes.
Balaclava (First Nest) was a town before 1957, now it is one of the districts of Sevastopol 12 km far from the center of the city. Its history extends back 3000 years. Splendid and beautiful Balaclava is situated in a small cozy bay. Homer describes the Bay of Balaclava as a port of Lestrigons where Odysseus stayed. Much later it served as a submarine base.
There are ruins of ancient city-colony of Chersoneses (Peninsula) between two bays. The picturesque landscapes of Chersoneses attract many tourists. They come in any season to see with their own eyes the mosaic panels and marble columns, painted pottery and tombstones of residents of Chersoneses. The ancient city that stood for 2000 years has a peculiar character that never fails to fascinate its visitors. Crimea is a unique combination of many cultures. Not far from Sevastopol there is the town of Bakhchisarai. The most celebrated sight of the town has always been the Khan's palace that was built in the 16th century. The fountain courtyard boasts the "Golden Fountain" and "The Fountain of Tears" cut of marble by an Iranian master craftsman Omer in 1764 and lauded by A.S. Pushkin's 1824 "Bakhchisarai Fountain" and "To the Fountain in the Palace of Bakhchisarai".
